Economic development

The City of Karratha sits at the heart of the Pilbara, one of Australia’s most economically significant regions. The local economy is underpinned by globally significant resource industries, strategic ports and a highly skilled workforce, positioning Karratha as a major contributor to Western Australia’s economy and an important hub for industry, logistics and investment.

Today, the City supports a highly productive regional economy generating more than $22 billion in annual economic output and supporting almost 15,000 jobs. While the resource sector remains the foundation of the region’s prosperity, the City is focused on strengthening long term economic resilience by supporting local businesses, attracting investment, developing tourism and enabling new industries to grow.

To guide this work, the City has adopted the Economic Development and Tourism Strategy (EDTS) 2025 to 2035, which provides a framework for sustainable economic growth, diversification and investment attraction while strengthening liveability and opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors.

The EDTS is built around five strategic pillars:

  • Build Economic Resilience Through Diversification
  • Provide an Enabling Environment for Business and Investment
  • Empower Local Business
  • Attract and Retain Residents and Talent
  • Develop a Tourism Industry
