FeNaClNG began in Dampier in 1972 when the Karratha Lion’s Club held its first family-friendly festival as a fundraising activity to support local community projects.
The name is derived from formulas for Iron, Salt and Natural Gas;
Iron: Fe
Salt: NaCl
Natural Gas: NG (not strictly correct but it makes the name work)
FeNaClNG (Fee-nackling) Festival has grown and developed over the years along with the changes to the local economy and community.
The popular festival sees Bulgarra Oval transform into a fairground with sideshows, rides, food stalls, community displays, entertainment and live music, and a fireworks display. Open 10am to 10pm with free entry.
In previous years, the Karratha Lion’s Club has delivered the festival, sponsored by the City of Karratha amongst others. However, as the Club disbanded in 2020, the City of Karratha has taken on the festival to continue the tradition. 2022 marked the 50th year of the FeNaClNG Festival, celebrating with displays showcasing the Pilbara and what its people has to offer.

Within the City of Karratha, the State’s observed King's Birthday will be regarded as an ordinary working day, and in exchange gazetting this public holiday to fall on the Monday following FeNaClNG Festival (subject to confirmation through the gazettal of Governor Orders):
