City of Karratha continues support of Pilbara Kimberly Universities Centre

Access to tertiary education in Karratha has received a boost, with Council agreeing to provide $370,000 funding over the next three years to the Pilbara Kimberley Universities Centre (PKUC).

The PKUC is a regional universities centre, supporting the delivery of online education courses in partnership with select Australian universities.

The PKUC was established in 2020 with its main facility located within The Quarter building in Karratha, additional facilities in Port Hedland and Broome, and further facilities to be established in Onslow and Tom Price in mid-2024.

The City has supported the PKUC from the initial feasibility study in 2018 and has provided annual financial support for its establishment and development, while the latest round of funding aims to accelerate PKUC's growth and produce local skills to support the City's development.

Since launching, the PKUC has helped 600 students, with 54 graduates to date and 32 more expected by the end of 2024.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the PKUC’s presence in Karratha is critical for the City's growth and its aspiration to become Australia's most liveable regional city.

“Over the last six years, the PKUC has supported students to achieve their education goals,” Cr Scott said.

“We are proud to continue to support such a positive venture that provides not only further education opportunities but also a positive impact on the economy, community, and local organisations.

“Over the last six years the PKUC’s total economic impact within the Pilbara and Kimberley region amounted to $21.96 for every dollar invested by the City.

“The Centre will continue to play a pivotal role in addressing local skills shortages, offering relevant courses to upskill locals, and even attracting new residents.”
