Former Mayor presented with Honorary Freeman award for years of service

Karratha stalwart named Honorary Freeman for his service and dedication to the community at a ceremony on Friday 21 March.

Former Mayor Peter Long became just the fourth person to be provided with Freeman honours, following Mr BR Sharpe,  Mr WA Leslie and Mr J Lally.

The ceremony, held at the Red Earth Arts Precinct on 21 February recognised Mr Long’s involvement in the community’s vibrancy, economic development and active participation in local community initiatives.

Mr Long served as a councillor for the Karratha Ward when it was the Shire of Roebourne from 2011-2013 and spent 10 years as the inaugural Mayor of the City of Karratha until 2023.

Mr Long was Mayor during a time of critical growth and development for the City, with Karratha transformed into a vibrant and modern regional hub.

Beyond his Mayoral responsibilities, Mr Long contributed significantly to community organisations and initiatives, including the Pilbara Universities Centre, and the North West Defence Alliance.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said he was privileged to bestow the title of Honorary Freeman to Mr Long.

“I want to personally thank Peter for taking me under his wing when I was first elected as a councillor in 2015,” Cr Scott said.

“It is a rarity to bestow the title of Honorary Freeman and it is an honour to present Peter with this title.

“Peter was Mayor during a vital time for our community, overseeing council, he oversaw some transformative projects including the Red Earth Arts Precinct, Karratha Leisureplex, and Wickham hub – leaving behind a lasting legacy for our community.

“Thank you for your dedication and hard work through all these years, your commitment to Karratha and the Pilbara has played a large role in Karratha becoming the City it is today.”
