The pavilion at the Kevin Richards Memorial Oval will be named after Karratha Kats legend and inaugural captain Barry Goddard.
Council voted to name the pavilion after Mr Goddard in recognition of the instrumental role he played in Karratha's development, both professionally and through his sporting endeavours.
As the first permanent Plumbing Inspector for the Public Works Department, he played a key role in the infrastructure of Karratha and surrounding areas.
Mr Goddard, a former East Perth WA Football League player, was also a founding member of the Karratha Kats Football Club, serving as its first League Captain and winning numerous sporting premierships.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the naming of pavilion recognised the significant impact Mr Goddard had on Karratha.
“Mr Goddard contributed to the establishment of key infrastructure such as the Karratha Shopping Centre and Aquatic Centre in our town,” Cr Scott said.
“His efforts with the Karratha Kats helped establish them as a powerhouse of the sporting community for decades to come and naming the pavilion after him is recognition of the lasting legacy he has left with our community.
“This legacy endures through his contributions to Karratha’s infrastructure and local sport, with Goddard Place and the Karratha Kats standing as lasting reminders of his dedication to the community.”
President of the Karratha Kats Football and Sporting Club, Shane Harris, said the naming of the new facilities is a fitting tribute to a much-loved founding member.
“On behalf of the Karratha Kats Football and Sporting Club, I’d like to thank the City of Karratha for supporting our proposal to name the pavilion and new clubrooms at Kevin Richards Oval after one of our founding members and community stalwarts, Barry Goddard,” Mr Harris said.
“Barry’s contribution to sport and community life in the former Shire of Roebourne was significant, and this decision ensures his legacy will live on.”
