Local role models and grassroots heroes in Karratha were celebrated at the Auspire Community Awards on January 26.
17 nominations were received across four award categories with winners announced at the community celebration hosted by the City of Karratha and supported by Rio Tinto.
This years categories were; Community Citizen of the Year, Senior Community Citizen of the Year ,Young Community Citizen of the Year and Active Citizenship Award
Carl Wangemann was named 2025 Community Citizen of the Year for his exceptional leadership as a Sensei at the Karratha Shotokan Karate Club, creating a welcoming spaces for all ages, and personal growth through karate.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said Mr Wangemann had helped boost connections across Karratha, Wickham and beyond.
“Carl’s dedication and leadership has helped expand the club’s reach and provide a place for community members of all ages to improve themselves through karate,” Cr Scott said.
“I would like to personally congratulate and thank all our nominees and award winners. Your unwavering commitment to the community is inspiring and helps improve the liveability of our towns.
“These awards highlight and celebrate the community spirit across all towns within the City of Karratha and the members who make our community such a fantastic place to live.
Auspire Community Award Winners
Community Citizen of the Year - Carl Wangemann
Carl was nominated for his exceptional leadership as a Sensei at the Karratha Shotokan Karate Club. Since joining in 2020, he has expanded the club’s reach, created welcoming spaces for all ages, and fostered personal growth through karate. His dedication to local outreach, including securing new training locations and organising community events, has strengthened connections across Karratha, Wickham, and beyond.
Young Community Citizen of the Year - Fern Van Beek
Fern has lived in Karratha most of her life and is dedicated to supporting her community. With qualifications in psychology, she’s worked as a Migrant Advocate and volunteered at Karratha Women’s Place, where she developed a support group for new mums. In 2023, she became KWP’s Women’s Counsellor, providing free mental health support to women in need. Fern’s work has significantly improved mental health access in the region, and she’s expanding services to offer longer-term support for women.
Senior Community Citizen of the Year - Dereka (Dee) Van Beek
Dee Van Beek has dedicated over 20 years to supporting vulnerable individuals in areas like mental health and domestic violence. In 2019, she founded Karratha Women’s Place (KWP), creating a safe space for women in the community. Despite financial challenges and personal setbacks, Dee’s determination and leadership have made KWP a vital resource, offering free programs and support. Her unwavering commitment has empowered women, fostered social connection, and made KWP a cornerstone of Karratha’s community.
Active Citizenship - The Northwest Multicultural Forum and Festival 2024 (Event)
Northwest Multicultural Forum and Festival was nominated for the Active Citizenship Award. With over 700 participants, the event fosters cultural exchange through meaningful discussions, performances, workshops, and cuisine, promoting inclusivity and understanding. It also supports local economic growth by providing opportunities for artisans, performers, and vendors. The festival's impact extends beyond the weekend, driving positive community change and creating new opportunities for empowerment, making it a key driver of cultural and economic vitality in the region.
