Policies FAQs

Policies - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

This FAQ explains how policies are developed, reviewed, and how community members can access or provide feedback on them.

What is a policy?

A policy is a high-level statement adopted by Council that sets out its position, principles, or direction on a particular matter. Policies help guide decision-making, ensure consistency, and support the delivery of services in line with the City's strategic objectives and legislative obligations.

Why does the City have policies?

Policies help the City:

  • Make decisions consistently and transparently.
  • Support good governance practices.
  • Meet legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Reflect community values and Council priorities.
  • Provide clear direction on matters affecting the community.

Who approves policies?

Council Policies are adopted, amended, or repealed by resolution of Council in accordance with the Local Government Act 1995. Council is responsible for determining the local government's policies.

Can the community have input into policies?

Yes. Where appropriate, draft policies may be released for public comment before Council considers adopting them. Community feedback helps inform Council's decision-making process and ensures policies reflect community needs and expectations.

How often are policies reviewed?

Policies are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain relevant, effective, and consistent with current legislation, industry standards, and community expectations. The review period may vary depending on the policy and any legislative requirements.

Why are some policies changed or repealed?

Policies may be amended or repealed when:

  • Legislation changes.
  • Council priorities change.
  • A policy is no longer required.
  • The policy duplicates legislative requirements.
  • Better governance or administrative arrangements are identified.

Regular reviews help ensure the City's policy framework remains contemporary and effective.

How will I know if a policy is being reviewed?

Where public consultation is required, details will be published on the City's website and community engagement platforms. This may include information about the proposed changes, consultation period, and how to provide feedback.

How can I suggest a new policy or provide feedback on an existing policy?

Community members are encouraged to contact the City at enquiries@karratha.wa.gov.au if they have suggestions, concerns, or feedback regarding Council policies. Feedback may be considered as part of future policy reviews and development processes.
