Wayiba! Wanthiwa!
The City of Karratha acknowledge the Ngarluma people as the Traditional Custodians of this land (ngurra) and their deep historical and spiritual connection to country, waterways, rivers and seas within the region. We recognise the ancient and continuing connection to the land we live and work on and the cultural responsibilities that arise from this connection..
Aboriginal people are the first inhabitants of Australia. They have lived on this land for many thousands of years and are recognised as one of the oldest living populations and cultures in the world, with unique languages and spiritual relationships. The name ‘Karratha’ originates from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘good country’ or ‘soft earth.’
The City acknowledges that past practices and policies have impacted on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people, and recognises the resulting pain and loss for Aboriginal people who were dislocated from their culture, displaced from their homelands and separated from their families.
We are committed to creating a place where people of all cultures are welcome, respected and have equal opportunity in the community. The City continues to work closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan based on listening, understanding, recognition, appreciation and a belief that we can achieve sustainable outcomes for a better future.
