Council adopts strategy for economic diversification and tourism growth

A bold 10-year strategy to power economic diversification, investment and tourism growth has been endorsed by the City of Karratha Council.

The Economic Development and Tourism Strategy 2025–2035 has been developed to guide the City’s approach to economic growth, diversification, and tourism development over the next decade.

The strategy outlines a coordinated plan to diversify the local economy, attract and retain skilled workers, empower small and medium enterprises, and position Karratha as a sustainable, world-class tourism destination.

This includes advocating for and supporting the development of critical infrastructure, empowering local businesses through targeted grants, simplifying local procurement processes, and expanding business development support.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the EDTS reflected the City’s commitment to long-term prosperity.

“Karratha powers the State and national economy, and this strategy ensures we build on that strength while creating new opportunities for our community,” Mayor Scott said.

“We are one of the most productive regions in Australia, but true resilience comes from diversification.

“This plan backs our local businesses, supports Aboriginal economic participation, grows emerging industries and expands tourism in a sustainable way.”

Tourism initiatives include the establishment of a Tourism Advisory Group, pursuit of ECO Destination accreditation,  improved visitor servicing, and advocacy for expanded flight networks and cruise capability.

“We have extraordinary Aboriginal culture, pristine coastal and marine environments and the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Murujuga Cultural Landscape firmly places Karratha on the global stage,” Mayor Scott said.

“We intend to make the most of that opportunity while protecting the cultural and environmental values that define our region.”
