Emissions roadmap adopted by Council

A roadmap for the City of Karratha to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 has been adopted by council.

Under the Local Government Act, Councils are required to plan, promote sustainability, and consider climate-related risks and long-term impacts.

To meet this requirement, the City adopted the Environmental Sustainability Strategy in 2021 which included a series of actions to address climate change, including establishing a baseline carbon footprint and set emissions reduction targets.

The City has now developed its Corporate Emissions Profile and Emissions Reduction Plan 2025 covering corporate Scope 1 and 2 emissions and outline priority actions across renewable energy, energy efficiency, fleet, waste management, and governance.

The Corporate Emissions Profile will serve as the baseline for emissions and will serve as the benchmark for tracking emissions over time.

City of Karratha Mayor said this document provided a practical roadmap to reduce emissions by 22% by 2030, 50% by 2040, and reach net zero by 2050.

“Australia and the world are moving towards net zero, and it is important that we take practical steps now to prepare for the future,” Mayor Scott said.

“This plan provides the City with ambitious but achievable targets to reduce them through innovation, technology, and collaboration.”
