St Luke’s year 12 student, Brian Nguyen, has been awarded the 2025 Walkington Award for his outstanding academic achievements, and significant involvement in the community.
Now in its 42nd year, the Walkington Award is presented annually to a City of Karratha Year 12 student to support their tertiary studies at a recognised institution.
The prize, worth $10,000, is named after the late Dr. Al Walkington Foundation Director of the Karratha College (North Regional TAFE).
Brian plans to study a double degree in engineering and philosophy, with an aim to return to Karratha as a chemical engineer and drive innovation in the creation of more sustainable energy.
A high achiever, Brian received the Year 11 Dux for achieving the highest mark in Chemistry, Physics, Maths Methods, and Maths Specialist. He also received the Semester 1 Year 12 Academic Excellence Awards for achieving the highest mark in Physics, Maths Methods, Maths Specialist.
He has also been an active community member, volunteering at St Vincent De Paul on weekends and has accumulated more than 200 hours of community service, qualified for Swimming Australia National Championships in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and competed in the 2023 National Championships as the only swimmer from Karratha.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the Walkington Award has a proud history of recognising students who excel academically, contribute to their communities, and participate in extracurricular activities.
“While we had some amazing applicants this year, Brian stood out for his outstanding academic and sporting achievements as well as his commitment to volunteering.
“I look forward to seeing Brian continue his academic career and the impact he makes on the world.”
