The City of Karratha has endorsed a proposal to support the establishment of Pilbara Gaming Development through its Economic Development Grant program.
Pilbara Gaming Development is an early-stage tech start-up with a vision to develop a game development and creative technology studio in Karratha.
Council approved a $20,000 grant for the company to assist with establishing the foundation phase of the gaming development project, including training, equipment, and collaborative spaces for local developers.
Pilbara Gaming Development are developing a multiplayer game, The Farlands, which will be the first of its kind for regional WA, with the Alpha release of the game acting as a as a proof-of-concept for the development and the studio.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the project has the potential to diversify the region’s economy and create exciting new opportunities for young people.
“The Pilbara is full of creative talent, and this proposal will help harness that by supporting a new industry right here in our region,” Cr Scott said.
“Gaming development is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global digital economy, and by backing initiatives like this we are helping create new jobs and pathways for our youth while building a more resilient and innovative local economy.”
Cr Scott said fostering emerging industries was a key focus of Council’s economic development strategy.
“This is about thinking long-term and making sure our community has diverse career options into the future.
“By supporting grassroots initiatives like Pilbara Gaming Development, we’re investing in the creative economy and giving our young people the tools and pathways to succeed in a global industry from right here at home.”
