The City of Karratha and Rio Tinto have partnered to deliver major upgrades to Wickham Oval.
Wickham Oval is the main sporting and community venue in the town and regularly features football, cricket school carnivals as well as community events.
The project works include re-levelling the oval and relaying turf, irrigation, improved drainage, lighting and sports goal upgrades.
The Carse Street Car Park will also be formalised as part of the works.
While the project is underway, the oval and informal carpark along Carse Street will be closed between September 2025 until May 2026 for safe construction and turf establishment.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the Wickham Oval Redevelopment will deliver a safer and more functional, sporting and community space.
“Wickham Oval is the main outdoor sporting facility for AFL, cricket, schools, and community events in Wickham,” Cr Scott said.
“These upgrades will help to resolve long standing drainage issues as well as creating a fit-for-purpose sporting and community facility in our Eastern Corridor.
“We are excited to partner with Rio Tinto to upgrade the Oval facility and provide lasting benefits for sporting groups, schools, and the wider Wickham community.”
Rio Tinto Iron Ore Managing Director Rail, Port and Core Services Richard Cohen said:
“We’re proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the City of Karratha to deliver projects that make a real difference in the communities where we operate.
"Wickham is home to many of our team members and their families, and we know what a great community this is.
“That’s why we’re excited that the upgrades to Wickham Oval will give residents a revitalised space to connect, celebrate local sport, and create lasting memories for years to come.”
