Harmony Week back bigger than ever with first-ever community parade in Karratha

Karratha will come together to celebrate cultural diversity, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians this March.

Harmony Week is an annual national celebration promoting cultural awareness and participation across all backgrounds, while showcasing the important contributions of local multicultural groups.

The free, all-ages event kicks off with a vibrant street parade along Sharpe Avenue from 5pm to 6pm, featuring local schools, community groups, businesses, emergency services, sporting clubs and a brass band.

Residents can watch the parade along Sharpe Avenue from the Red Earth Arts Precinct carpark to The Quarter, with road closures in place from 5pm to 6pm.

Festivities continue from 6pm to 8pm at The Quarter grassed area with a Welcome to Country, cultural performances, live music, international cuisine, food vans, children’s activities and a cultural fashion show.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said Harmony Week was an opportunity to celebrate the people and cultures that shape Karratha.

“Harmony Week is about recognising that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths,” Mayor Scott said.

“Karratha is home to people from across Australia and around the world who have chosen to build their lives here in the Pilbara. This event celebrates those cultures, shares stories and reinforces a simple but powerful message that everyone belongs.”

Mayor Scott said the City was proud to host its first street parade.

“This is the first Harmony Week parade we’ve delivered, and we hope it grows each year as more groups get involved. It’s wonderful to see our schools, community groups, businesses and services come together in a visible show of unity and pride.”

Harmony Week is presented by the City of Karratha in collaboration with Northwest Multicultural Association WA, event sponsors Pilbara Community Legal Service, and the Government of Western Australia Office of Multicultural Interests.
