Karratha Airport named Large Regional Airport of the Year at the industry’s top awards night.
The Australian Airports Association National Airport Industry Awards were held on 3 December and celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership across the sector.
The award recognised the City’s leadership in sustainability through a multi-stage upgrade of the airports water distribution network and deployment of smart meters enabling real-time monitoring across large areas.
Other enhancements included improving the wastewater system to boost recycled water use, while also switching to solar carpark lighting and modern, energy-efficient passenger screens.
The win builds on the Airport’s earlier recognition this year, when it was named the state’s leading waterwise business for halving potable water usage through recycled systems and water-saving infrastructure improvements.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the award was an acknowledgment of the ongoing commitment to sustainability and resilience.
“This is a proud moment for our airport team, who have shown what leadership and innovation can do,” Mayor Scott said.
“By integrating water, energy and technology improvements we have reduced waste, cut resource use, and delivered long-term benefits to both the community and the environment.”
Mayor Scott said the recognition comes at a pivotal time for the region, with the City formally applying for international airport status this month.
“Securing international status is an important step for our community’s future,” Mayor Scott said.
“The assessment process typically involves about 18 months of detailed work with the Department of Infrastructure.
“It’s a significant undertaking, but one that has the potential to strengthen connectivity, support local jobs and open new opportunities for our residents and businesses.”
