Plans for a waterpark within the City of Karratha have taken a step forward with the preferred location identified by Council.
Following a feasibility study into the suitability of a waterpark within the City of Karratha, the Karratha Leisureplex has been selected as the most suitable site.
The Waterplay Feasibility Study was undertaken to determine whether additional water-based recreation facilities would be viable and appropriate for the City of Karratha.
25 sites were assessed across Karratha, Dampier, Wickham, Roebourne and Point Samson, with the Karratha Leisureplex site deemed most suitable due to its existing aquatic infrastructure, established operations and accessibility, having the potential to accommodate a larger regional-scale facility outcome in the future.
As part of the study, 94 community members aged 15 to 69 participated in a public survey, with 99 per cent supporting public investment in a waterplay facility.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said receiving the preferred location was the first step to delivering on the community’s request for a waterpark.
“We know through both our Council Plan and our wider consultation that there is strong demand for waterplay recreation,” Mayor Scott said.
“Council has listened to this feedback and is working to progress a facility that will provide a high-quality recreational option for our community.
“Identifying the Karratha Leisureplex as the preferred location is an important first step, with the existing aquatic facilities and broader precinct providing a strong foundation for a future waterpark.
“There is still work to do before a project can progress, including determining the best location within the precinct, the infrastructure requirements and the likely cost.
“That work will now form part of the Karratha Leisureplex Masterplan currently underway, giving us a clearer picture of what a future waterplay facility could look like here and how it could fit within the broader precinct.”
Planning for enhanced water play will be incorporated into the Karratha Leisureplex master planning process, expected to be submitted to Council this financial year.
