There is just under two weeks until every voice in the region is counted this Census night.
The Census is one of the most important ways the community is seen, heard and supported.
Conducted every five years by the ABS, it provides a snapshot of Australia’s population and trends which informs critical decisions that guide the future of the nation.
The information collected helps governments make informed decisions about funding and planning for essential infrastructure and services, including roads, hospitals, schools and community facilities.
For regions like the City of Karratha, where a large fly-in fly-out and temporary workforce contributes to the local population, an accurate Census count is especially important.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said every person counted helps build a stronger case for future investment in the region.
"We estimate the last Census undercounted the population of the City of Karratha by more than 5,000 people," Mayor Scott said.
"When people aren't counted, it can affect future funding, planning and the delivery of services our growing community relies on.
“The rule for the Census is wherever you spend more than 50% of your time, that’s your Usual Place of Residence, and this applies to many of our FIFO workers.
"So whether you're a permanent resident, spend the majority of your time here for work, or are staying in the region on Census night, it's important you complete the Census so our community is accurately represented.
"Just a few minutes can make a lasting difference to the future of our region."
Census night is Tuesday 11 August 2026. For remote communities, the Census can be completed between July and September 2026.
